off the charts sparkle factor

Toronto artist Lisa Ridout has just sent us a delicious shipment of new joolz that sparkle with Swarovski crystals and gleaming sterling silver. Known for her great sense of style and meticulous craftsmanship, Lisa takes handcrafted jewelry to its highest level. We just love her work and so do our customers.

This morning I worked to put her 14 new pieces into inventory, rearranged a few cases and opened the doors. Alice came in to work a few hours later and I encouraged her to wear one of Lisa's new pieces, the aqua Carlu pendant on an elegant sterling choker. It looked magnificent on Alice and she was just beaming.

In walked a new customer, accompanied by her daughter and two granddaughters. She said she was looking for something "pink." I showed her a number of pieces, including Lisa's Carlu pendant in pink. She then asked to try it with the choker Alice was wearing. The result was heaven and she took both pieces. Another perfect match. Alice had to look for another Lisa Ridout necklace to wear with the aqua pendant.

Lisa has also sent us the Carlu bracelet in aqua - a showstopper in its own right:

The sparkle factor is off the charts but not all of Lisa's pieces include crystals. Here is her charming Flower bracelet. We also have the matching pendant and earrings:

This is one talented lady. Each link is handmade by Lisa and then incorporated into outstanding designs. Come in and see them all for yourself. You won't be disappointed.

joolz artist rocks american idol

I admit it. I am an American Idol junkie. I love, love, love the show. Last season I was all about Adam Lambert and you may remember that my husband got tix to the AI tour for my Mother's Day present. Seeing Glambert perform in person really rocked my boat - it was a night I'll never forget.

This season - from the very beginning - I have been all about Crystal Bowersox. Her glorious, pure voice says something to me and I could listen to her for hours. She has a unique singing style and certainly a unique appearance. Imagine my surprise when I learned she wore earrings designed by Pittsford artist Nicole Yacano last week - feathers, gold, carnelian -- definitely Crystal.

Nicole has been a JOOLZ artist for over a year and her work always garners comments. Tonight in the finale Crystal again wore earrings designed by Nicole - turquoise, gold, feathers. I hope they brought her good luck - she deserves to win. Looks like Nicole already has!

an issue of trust

A gentleman came into the store the other day, looking for an anniversary gift. He told me that each year he and his wife celebrate the anniversary of their first date...and this year they would be celebrating their 50th. He also told me he had already given her an anniversary present - a shotgun! - so his budget was limited. I stifled my reaction to the gun info. We found a lovely necklace that he thought she would like, I wrapped it up for him and away he went.

I, meanwhile, kept thinking about the shotgun. That certainly says something about their relationship. No question in his mind that she might use the shotgun on him. Nope - theirs was a marriage of trust.

The next day they came into the shop together, she wearing the necklace, looking for the matching earrings. No gun in sight. The trust was still there. Happy Anniversary to them both!

having the time of her life

This marvelous picture of a dear friend, Eleanor Hickman, was featured in today's Daily Messenger. Eleanor is 100 years old, a gracious, lovely woman who is always up for a fun adventure. How about a hot air balloon ride? Up she went, gleefully riding high above Canandaigua Lake. She makes my heart sing.

this is the place!

A woman came in to browse this morning. She said she had been in before and only had a few minutes to look around. She tried on some earrings and then took a phone call on her cell phone: her husband was waiting out in the car for her.

She tried on a few more earrings and then said, "I really have to go - he's waiting for me."

About 3 minutes later she returned, this time accompanied by her husband. She tried on a few pairs of earrings for him and said, "If you ever want to buy jewelry for me, this is the place!"

I think they'll both be back.

fashion show fabulocity

One of my all time favorite stores for classic but updated clothing is Jane Morgan's Little House in Aurora, NY. Located in a charming little village on the shores of Cayuga Lake, JMLH is a shopper's paradise. The owner, Randi Zabriskie, has an eye for style like no other. She knows what's in, what's out, what's coming and what to avoid. She throws out little fashion tips such as "showing your wrists makes your hips look smaller!!"

For several years Randi has taken her clothing on the road, producing fabulous fashion shows at a few different venues. Today the show was at a women's club in Rochester and Randi wanted to accessorize a few of her outfits with joolz from JOOLZ. I drove over to Aurora on Sunday with a selection of joolz and let her take her pick - sterling silver ribbon earrings by Reiko Ishiyama, a white cotton ball neck collar by Abra Gorby and a peach-colored keshi pearl and sunstone necklace by Gretchen Gray. It was such fun to watch Randi match the joolz to the outfits - like the pairing of a good wine with a gourmet meal. She really knows her inventory and her models - both were a perfect match for the chosen joolz and the show was a resounding success. Thanks for the collaboration, Randi. I hope we can do it again sometime.

special delivery

I had the thrill this morning of hand delivering a special order piece to one of our frequent customers.

This only child had inherited several loose gemstones from her mother and was looking for a way to incorporate them in a more contemporary piece of jewelry. Her mother had worn a favorite dinner ring every time she went out for a special occasion and our customer especially wanted to use the ring's large stone in her new piece. Both the customer and I thought that Craig Hagstrom, from Sequim, Washington, might be the right artist to work magic with her stones.

I had found Craig's work in a catalog full of handcrafted jewelry and contacted him last summer. We arranged to meet in NYC and I jet-setted down for an afternoon of joolz shopping, choosing several wonderful pieces. I wrote about the day in my October 2007 newsletter. Craig has become one of our most popular artists and had already created a custom piece for another JOOLZ customer.

We sent off the stones to Craig and he worked up three different designs. The best fit seemed to be the bracelet, which included all of the customer's stones and some provided by Craig. And by wearing the joolz on her wrist, the customer could see her favorite stones whenever she looked down, something she would have been unable to do had she chosen the pendant designs.

Craig was so excited to see the design come to life that he completed the work in about 24 hours, mailed the bracelet off to me and I delivered it to the customer this morning. Craig was thrilled, I was thrilled and most importantly, the customer was thrilled with her very special delivery.

the day after

It's the day after...3 long festival days have ended and we are taking a much-needed break.

I'd say the festival received mixed reviews. The weather didn't cooperate completely and there were several outbursts of heavy rain and wind. The humidity was extremely high all weekend and while the vendors and visitors suffered, we were grateful to be in air conditioning.

Several vendors said they weren't selling like in years past and several attendees said the number of vendors was down from previous years. It's obvious that the faltering economy is affecting everyone. We did less business than last year but we had lots of visitors, many of them finding the shop for the first time. Building our presence and spreading the word continues to be a full-time effort.

One of our first-time visitors struck gold (well, really silver, gold and pearls - but you get the idea). She was with a friend and they took their time looking through the store. Just as she was about to check out with her first find, she saw a display on the very front table that she had missed on her way in. She tried on a necklace and I heard a soft voice say "Ohhh, I really like this." She moved from mirror to mirror, brought over her friend and they both were smiling. Then she went to get the matching earrings. Her eyes were shining, she was smiling and the jewelry looked drop-dead gorgeous on her. She will be the MOB (mother of the bride) at her daughter's August wedding and she had just found the perfect joolz to go with her tea-length black chiffon dress. She will look simply amazing. I actually got shivers at the shop yesterday, so I knew it was meant to be. That only happens when I see the right piece of jewelry on the right customer. The other piece of "meant to be" is that the artist's name is Thompson and the customer works for Thompson Health. How about that?
